Abstract
Relative importance rating of psychiatric consultation functions in a general hospital were examined using 18-item questionnaire form. Total 134 nonpsychiatric nurses of full-time charge in the inpatient service departments attended the study.
Followings are the principal results
1. Among the psychiatric consultation functions nurses considered doing psychotherapy
as the most important one : followed by mental status examination, evaluation of psychogenesis or understanding¢¥ the psychological aspect of somatic illness, and making suggestions for ward management of a patient according to the importance rating order.
2. Other psychiatric consultation functions such as use of psychiatric medication, additional diagnostic work-up, and follow-up visit were regarded as moderately (middle-ranged) important ones, whereas transfer to psychiatric ward or O.P.D. care received lowest ratings by nurses.
3. The fact. that nurses are much more concerned about psychological aspect in the patient care than physicians suggest. their. holistic view in medicine, which should be incorporated into future psychiatric consultation strategies.
